how to rebuild the alpine zones on the highest Adiron dack summits after they were trampled. The first Trail Crew work was on the Iroquois herd path prior to the 1976 Spring Meeting in conjunction with NY State DEC personnel. During the summer of 1977, the first all-46er volunteer crew of eight, led by Walter Her rod (#750), worked four days rerouting and bridging “on a swampy half-mile section of the Lake Arnold cross-over trail near Feldspar lean-to,” according to the 2011 46er history book Heaven Up-h’isted-ness!. The late Jim Goodwin (#24) was appointed the first Trailmaster at the Spring 1978 meeting. At the Fall 1978 meeting, Conservation Service Awards were established, and the volunteer hours started adding up the next year. Jim Goodwin served as the lone Trailmaster until 1982. He then handed the reins to the legendary Behr fam ily—Chris M. (#1454), his wife, June (#1455), and their son, Chris G. (#1453). The Behrs ran the Trail Crew until 1995, at which time Len Grubbs, Joe Urbanczyk (#2151V), and David Hudda (#3018V) took over. Since then, the num ber of Trailmasters, the number of crew outings, and the amount of work accomplished each year has increased. If every 46er gave back just 46 hours, there is no telling how much good would come to the woods. And there's a neat patch to be had, besides. Put in 146 Hours and you get two patches: the 146 Hours emblem and the gold-ringed 46er V. From there, you might as well go all-in and aim for the 2,046!

Each year the 46ers pay the tuition for four students from the high peaks region be tween the ages of 12–17 to attend one of the DEC Conservation Camps. This year we gave four scholarships to the follow ing campers: William, Thomas, Trevor, and Arayana. William and Thomas went to the DEC Pack Forest camp in Warrensburg. The boys appreciated the opportunity to spend time outdoors. They love fishing, the Ad irondack mountains, hunting, and hiking in their free time. Both were grateful for the chance to attend a camp focused on their interests. Trevor also attended DEC Pack For est camp. He enjoyed being in nature and learned so many new things—one being to always respect nature. He also enjoyed making new friends. Arayana attended DEC Camp Rushford in western NY (no photo available).
