Adirondack Peeks Winter 2023

ly short as we were all hoping to get done before the dreaded “headlamp o’clock” returned. So, after refueling and changing out some wet clothes, we headed down our tracks. The descent down the bushwhack felt like a breeze compared to the climb up, and once we got back to Wallface Ponds we took another break to snack and hydrate before the walk out. While we did not rush out, we kept a steady pace, and the hike back to the parking lot was uneventful, though filled with perhaps even more laughs than the way in. Ul timately, we did just (barely) manage to beat headlamp o’clock. More high fives and congratulations were ex changed in the parking lot as night fully set in. There was a palpable feeling of accomplishment among the group. It seemed like a truly fitting end to the 2022–2023 winter season. All told, it took us almost 13 and a half hours to cover the 16.9 miles and 2,975 feet of elevation gain required to successfully make the first summit of MacNaughton for the 2022–2023 winter season on March 18, 2023. An epic day summiting #47 with a fantastic group of adven turers. I gained the ridgeline, minus some skin, wondering which direction the true summit was in. There's the register, looking shiny and red. Now it's time for the blackflies to be fed. Number 47, MacNaughton, you're mine! Now if only Wallface Pond again I can find. Sixty-five degrees did it, I'm on my way, and a long swim at Rocky Falls rounds out the day.

I climbed MacNaughton on Saturday. I wonder how long 'fore the scars go away. The weather was perfect, a fine Summer day. Tho the morning was blustery, cloudy and grey. The 6.7 miles to Wallface Pond went quickly, then I started the bushwhack, and things got prickly. I stuck to the bearing of two forty-five, battling the cripplebush, which was tearing my hide.
