Adirondack Peeks Winter 2023
fast, eager to help George carry the meal and glassware out to the large wooden table on the porch among the tall trees. Little do Kim and I know that we are sitting at Grace and Ed’s dinner table and eating off their plates. The pattern reminds me of my grandmother’s plates.
I’m endlessly captivated by Adirondack history and enjoy learning more about the mountains, the early hikers, and the evolution of the Adirondack 46ers. I’m also inspired by all the people who have done so much for the club and for the Adirondack wilderness.
What are we having? Power bowls! The interview is over, and Suzanne politely informs us that it’s her time now to ask Kim and me questions. We dig in and pile our bowls with lettuce, couscous, chickpeas, cucumbers, feta, olives, tomatoes, green beans, grapes, nuts, chicken, and top it all with pickled red onions. The conversation ranges from jobs and families to just fun forty-sixer stories filled with comradery and hiking. Suzanne cautions me as I head for seconds: “Be sure to save room for dessert!” In no time we are piling homemade apple, blueberry, cinnamon pie on our plates—a perfect meal, and just the kind a 46er dreams about as they slog out the last two miles to the car!
