Daughter Brianna Becoming 46er #9834
Marybeth and Andy with Big Smiles
Tomorrow, I will visit my mom, and I will show her the photo from our hike Mt. Washington. I will again tell her the story of when she made me hike up Mt. Washing ton, and how miserable I was, and how miserable I made everyone around me. And I will remind her that, several
times that day, she told me that I would thank her one day for making me go on that hike because I would love hiking someday. She won’t remember, but I can remind her of it and tell her that she was right. IN MEMORIAM

ADK, Albany Chapter, lost a hiking legend earlier this year. Nola Royce, chapter member and trip leader for 50 years, passed away at age 78. At just under 5 feet and light as a feather, Nola's indomitable spirit was as big as the mountains she summited. In 1983, she was the third woman to hike all 46 High Peaks in the winter. Nola was also an experienced rock and ice climber and biking aficionado. She trekked all over the world including the Pamir Range, Denali, Rainier, Killy, Aspiring, Aconcagua, and countless more. As a cancer survivor, she summitted Antartica's highest, Mount Vinson, not once but twice. She was a Colorado 14er finisher, AMC 4000, and Catskill 3500, and, for a while, Nola was even a competitive bodybuilder. On winter peak bagging trips, when the gear was divvied up, Nola always reached for the heaviest load. She was an inspiration to all and will be greatly missed.
