CLOSER LOOK

Among the eye-catching features in Brian Steere’s home are the cutouts with screens separating the main-floor kitchen and dining room from the family room seven steps below. Alair Homes owner Adam Kilgore used them to replace an existing cable-and-wood railing system. He sketched what he describes as “crisscrosses of these modern-lined structures.” Akron metal fabricator Cody Grimsley then created them in black powder-coated steel. “I wanted to do something that was a little more creative and more interesting to join those two spaces together,” Kilgore explains, “but still provide some protection, a safety barrier.”
