Pool water pH must be properly maintained in order for all pool chemicals to work correctly. A balanced pH also helps prevent eye and skin irritation, as well as damage to filtration equipment and pool surfaces. • Test pH every day. Ideal range is 7.4-7.6.
Chlorinating your pool water daily is a consistent means of controlling and protecting your pool from algae and bacteria. • Ideal range for free chlorine is 1.0-1.5 ppm (varies by state). • Test chlorine levels every day. • Never allow the chlorine level to drop below ideal level. HD Supply Facilities
Shocking (or super chlorinating) your pool must be done periodically to remove waste materials such as suntan oils, perspiration, body oils, and other organic wastes. The best time to shock is early evening so the sun will not reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Make sure the pool circulating system is in operation. Close the pool after shocking/ super chlorinating until the total chlorine reading drops below 3 ppm.
Algaecides work hand in hand with chlorine and shock treatment to prevent algae and bacteria. To treat algae, you must first identify the type of algae present (see troubleshooting tips), and then use the task- specific algaecide to prevent or treat the problem. Use algaecides as part of your routine maintenance program.
Your residents or guests expect clear
and sparkling pool water. Clarifiers are
designed to keep your pool water crystal clear.
Maintenance offers both slow and fast dissolving chlorinating products.
TroubleshootingTips
CLOUDY WATER - Clarifiers (116631 and 116630) will aid in removing particles, but the source of the problem should also be determined. 1. Check filtration system for malfunction. 2. Test pH and total alkalinity and adjust if necessary. Adjust alkalinity with Alkalinity Booster (116602/116636). Adjust pH using pH Up Soda Ash (116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601). 3. If total alkalinity and pH are correct, shock pool water with Shock Quick Pouch (116619/116647) and run the pump on longer cycle. EYE/SKIN IRRITATION - pH is out of proper range. 1. Test pH and adjust using pH Up Soda Ash (116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601).
BROWN/MUSTARD ALGAE - Appears in patches. Brushes away easily but reappears quickly. 1. Brush algae off of pool surfaces. 2. Test pH and adjust using pH Up Soda Ash (116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601). 3. Shock pool water with Shock Quick Pouch (116619/116647) using 3 times the normal shock dosage. 4. Run the pump on longer cycle. 5. Treat with Mustard Algaecide the next day (116626). BLACK ALGAE - Appears as black spots.
Note: These instructions and Black Algaecide may only be used on unpainted concrete-type pools. 1. Brush pool surfaces with wire algae brush. 2. Test pH and adjust using pH Up Soda Ash (116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601). 3. Shock pool water with Shock Quick Pouch (116619/116647) or Non-Chlorine Shock Treatment (116621) using 3 times the normal shock dosage. 4. Run the pump on longer cycle. 5. Treat with Black Algaecide (114611) and use Algaecide 60% Concentrate (116624) for maintenance.
Some items on this page may require additional delivery time. For more information please call 1-800-431-3000. 2. If pH is correct, shock pool water with Shock Quick Pouch (116619/116647) or Non-Chlorine Shock Treatment (116621) and run the pump on longer cycle. CHLORINE ODOR - Chloramines present due to inadequate levels of free chlorine. 1. Test pH and adjust using pH Up Soda Ash (116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601). 2. Shock pool water with Shock Quick Pouch (116619/116647) or Non-Chlorine Shock Treatment (116621) and run the pump on longer cycle GREEN ALGAE - Caused by inadequate chlorine levels. (Water is green) 1. 5. Treat with Green Algaecide the next day (116625). BLUE/GREEN WATER - Water looks blue/green. 1. Test pH and adjust using pH Up Soda Ash
(116600/116635) or pH Down Dry Acid (116601). 2. Use Clarifier (116631) and vacuum any fallout to avoid staining
