FrancisCorps is a young adult volunteer service experience which has as its goal the famous saying attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi: "Preach the Gospel, if necessary use words!" TYPE OF PLACEMENT: The FrancisCorps experience, based on the examples of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi, calls for a 50/50 focus on both community life and service. In regards to community life, volunteers live in a house where they form community with other volunteers. They share at least one meal a day, every day. They pray together every day. They meet as a house to reflect on their experience once a week. Once a week a friar, sister or secular Franciscan joins them for community night. They participate in 5 retreats throughout the year and journey on a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy, in order to experience the Franciscan charism firsthand! In regards to service, all service site opportunities focus on providing volunteers direct interaction with those they serve and serve alongside in order to build relationships and understanding. The type of work at these service sites includes but is not limited to: youth mentorship, hospice care, health care, refugee resettlement, teaching, social services (emergency drop-in centers, soup kitchens, food pantries, homelessness, women's shelters, etc.), and assisting developmentally disabled adults. SERVICE AREA: The vibrant and richly diverse but often forgotten community of Syracuse, New York. SERVICE LENGTH: One year, renewable. Beginning of August to end of June. REQUIREMENTS: FrancisCorps volunteers are single, mostly Catholic young adults with a commitment to service and openness to an experience of personal, professional and spiritual growth and development through community building, prayer and reflection. The application process includes the online application, letters of reference, and interview in order to receive a decision.
