CATHOLICVOLUNTEERNETWORK .ORG | RESPONSE 2019 TYPE OF PLACEMENT: AmeriCorps Members: Serve in programs addressing issues of poverty, education, substandard housing, hunger, and more. Short-term: Various opportunities available year- round, including opportunities for experienced home repair crew leaders and in our Christmas and summer school supply programs. Summer Camp opportunities for camp counselors, photography/ social media coordinators, lifeguards, medical personnel, office helpers, cooks, and arts and crafts instructors for two summer camps. you experience the richness of the city at an unprecedented time in its history. As a smaller program, our community has unparalleled resources to give the personal touch to your year of service. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Facilitating nutrition, local farming, and food entrepreneurship in one of Detroit's largest food deserts; teaching in one of the city's four remaining Catholic elementary schools; community organizing with faith-based groups; social work with seniors and at-risk youth; community outreach; soup kitchen direct service; homeless youth ministry; asset building; and more! The needs of our community our many and are constantly evolving. AREA OF SERVICE: Detroit, Michigan LENGTH OF SERVICE: One-year terms run mid-August through the end of July. Renewable for up to three years. REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 21 years of age and a college graduate (or equivalent professional experience or training). FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Stipend, health insurance, access to community car, room and board, internet, help deferring student loans. Upon completion of the service year, volunteers receive a $1,500 education stipend. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers will live in community supporting each other, having fun, cultivating faith, cooking meals, and performing chores in a house next to Christ the King Catholic Church which is walking distance to several grocery stores, a public library, a historic (and affordable!) movie theater, and other great amenities. Opportunities for faith sharing and spiritual growth will be available both within the CKSC community and Christ the King Parish. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 6-11 volunteers TRAINING: One to two weeks of job-specific training in August. Volunteer support and mentoring throughout the year. Orientation to surrounding community. CAP serves people in need (children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities) in Eastern Kentucky. CAP Volunteers commit to the pillars of Service, Community, and Spirituality and/or personal reflection. CAP offers a strong cultural experience, an assortment of service placements, distinctive community living, an interdenominational Christian environment, and a flexible time commitment. AFFILIATIONS: Ecumenical GOAL OF PROGRAM: The mission of Christ House is to provide comprehensive and compassionate health care to sick and homeless men and to assist them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness. We accomplish our mission by: 1) Providing hospitality; 2) Supporting patients in their healing through a holistic approach; 3) Empowering individuals on their path toward stability; 4) Creating community. We provide 24-hour nursing/medical care, social services, addictions counseling, structured community activities, food, clothing, and a safe place to rest and recover for all patients. Our program seeks to treat immediate medical needs of patients and attempts to find suitable and supportive housing placements for patients upon discharge. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Year-long volunteers: Nurse, Homeless Respite Care Assistant, Activities Coordinator, Clinical Unit Assistant, Case Management Assistant and Administration Assistant. AREA OF SERVICE: Washington, DC LENGTH OF SERVICE: Long-term: 12 months, can be renewed for a second year. The volunteer year begins in June each year through June the following year. REQUIREMENTS: Desire to work with those who are homeless, coping with addictions, and have various physical and mental health needs; Be willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Live and fully participate in the Emmanuel House community, including weekly Community Nights. Commit to being present in mind, heart, and body throughout the year of service. Actively contribute to the Christ House mission of providing comprehensive health care to sick, homeless men and women and to assist them in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness. Provide documentation of eligibility for employment and routine immunizations. Must be at least 21 years of age at the start of the program, submit our on-line volunteer application packet (including a completed application and three reference forms), and undergo an interview process. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board in a fully furnished row house, health, dental and vision insurance (if needed), monthly stipend of $125 (after taxes), accrued time off (vacation, sick, and holiday leave). LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Intentional year-long residential community at Emmanuel House, including room and board (one block from Christ House). SIZE OF PROGRAM: Seven to eight year-long volunteers. TRAINING: Christ House provides on-site training. An orientation is held in early June for year-long volunteers. Volunteers also participate in two retreats and monthly in service trainings throughout the year. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning December 1st each year.
