In this process, staff will explore the relationship between faith and service while discerning God's call in their life. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteer management, facilitating home repair, assessing family needs, facility and financial management of the program. AREA OF SERVICE: Central Appalachia - North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia LENGTH OF SERVICE: Long-term: 12 months - May to May. Short- term: 11 weeks - End of May to early August REQUIREMENTS: 18 years old, CPR certified, and drivers license. Desire to serve volunteers, homeowners, staff and God. The work has as its primary focus responding to the undocumented, immigrants, and refugees. The ministry of Annunciation House consists in the sharing of one's life through the operation of several houses of hospitality; advocacy on behalf of the poor in migration; and awareness and immersion experiences. The hospitality offered in two large houses includes everything from food, shelter, clothing and social needs, to networking with immigration asylum counselors and lawyers. Annunciation House is an independent effort sustained by individual contributions and donations, and by an all-volunteer staff. For the volunteers, service at Annunciation House is a way of being and living at a particular time in one's life. The work is your life and the living is your work. It is important for volunteers to realize that there must be an openness to doing whatever there is to be done and serving wherever one is needed. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Hospitality shelter staff, social services, work with Latinos (especially people fromMexico and some Central and South Americans), immigration/refugee services, basic health care, border education and research, office and computer work, accounting and bookkeeping, building maintenance and construction trades. AREA OF SERVICE: El Paso, TX LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year or longer. Shorter term and special skills (e.g. research interns, construction trades, building maintenance, computer, accounting, etc.) volunteer requests handled on a case-by- case basis. Summer: 10-week program available. REQUIREMENTS: Men and women. Single or married without dependents. Open to prayer and spiritual reflection. Ages 20 years and older. Application, references, background check, physical examination and phone interview. College education and Spanish extremely helpful. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board are provided. Health and accident insurance for year-long volunteers. Short-term volunteers must provide their own health insurance. Transportation allowance after one complete year of service. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in the houses of hospitality in their own room or with a roommate. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Varies TRAINING: An initial two-week-long orientation is given on-site, as well as ongoing and in-service training. Volunteers meet regularly for staff meetings, prayer and reflection. There are also periodic gatherings for discussion, education and recreation.
