LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: VIP's live with other interns geographically near the Visitation Monastery. They form community with the other VIP's and interact with other service groups in the neighborhood. SIZE OF PROGRAM: Four people TRAINING: VIP's arrive in late August and receive two weeks of orientation before beginning their service. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications preferred by May 15, but will be considered on a rolling basis.
Volunteer Ministries— United Church of Christ
GOAL OF PROGRAM: Volunteers for Life is an organization dedicated to restoring society to a culture of life. Its members believe that human life is a sacred gift from God and must be preserved from the moment of fertilization to the moment of natural death. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, they are called to a life of prayer and action. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers work in pro-life agencies, such as pregnancy counseling centers, maternity homes, women and children's homeless shelter, senior citizen's residence, bio-ethics educational agency, respect life office, parishes, day care centers, settlement houses-wherever positive pro-life family values are being promoted. Volunteers may do direct service or management. AREA OF SERVICE: Volunteers serve in Los Angeles County and in Orange County. LENGTH OF SERVICE: One year, renewable for a second year. REQUIREMENTS: Single women 21+, without dependents, with college education and/or work experience. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and board, stipend, and medical insurance. Mileage or bus pass to and from place of work are provided. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers live in a house with one Sister of Social Service. Four other Sisters live nearby in apartments. The Volunteers for Life house is used for all volunteer activities, meetings, gatherings, parties, etc. Volunteers are expected to participate in all the regular routine of daily community living, including shopping, cooking, daily community prayers, and daily mass. Weekends are generally free. We try to make present a community living that exemplifies the early Christian community: "See how these Christians love one another." SIZE OF PROGRAM: Varies from three to six volunteers. TRAINING: A one-week orientation program is provided at the Volunteers for Life house plus in-service training at the placement site. Affiliated with national UCC Young Adult Service Corps. GOAL OF PROGRAM: The Westmoreland Volunteer Corps (WVC) offers five young adults an opportunity for year-long meaningful service, simple living and spiritual growth in intentional community. Corps members tackle challenging societal issues through work in health care, social services, social justice, legal aid and immigrant rights agencies in eleven month internships in the Washington area. A dedicated community counselor encourages and supports individual spiritual growth and exploration of values.

The Young Adult Service Communities (11 months) and Summer Communities of Service (10 weeks), place groups of 2-6 interns in their 20s with a local host program for direct service or justice advocacy, living in intentional community, and leadership development for faith-based justice.The Partners in Service program for individuals and couples ages 19 and older to serve with an individual agency to increase its capacity to serve. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Health and human service agencies, disaster ministries, camps and conference centers, housing cooperatives, food banks, congregations, homeless shelters, and advocacy ministries. AREA OF SERVICE: United States LENGTH OF SERVICE: Young Adult Service Communities: 11 months, September - July. Summer Communities of Service: 10 weeks in summer. Partners in Service-Long-term: Nine months to one year or longer. Short-term: One month to eight months. REQUIREMENTS: Ages 21-35 years (Young Adult Service Communities). Ages 19 + years (Summer Communities of Service). At least 19 years of age (Partners in Service). Willingness to re-locate for a period of time and be in service with others. Volunteers pay for travel. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room, board, small monthly stipend for personal expenses. Medical insurance (if needed). Support for Loan forbearance, deferment, or entry into U.S. Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Varies, depending on host agency's setting: TRAINING: Long-term: On-site training is provided by host agency. Annual mid-year gathering organized by Office of Volunteer Ministries. Short-term: On-site training is provided by host agency.
