A tough, durable tree that is very adaptable. Coarse textured tree with deeply fissured bark. One of the first trees to green up in spring, and one of the first trees to exhibit fall color. In spring, 6-8" long greenish yellow flowers appear, giving way to light brown prickly capsules which contain a shiny brown seed. The seeds resemble Horsechestnut. The seeds are poisonous. 40'x40' Zones 4-5 MAY

A white barked birch that is quite pyramidal when young. Exfoliating chalky-white bark when older. Very effective if planted with or in front of evergreen groupings. A rapid growing tree with large heart-shaped leaves. White flowers in 4-8" long panicles in late June. Fruit is a long pod. Very tolerant of difficult conditions. 50'x35-40' Zones 4-7 JUN

U. x 'Frontier' FRONTIER ELM

This U.S. National Arboretum introduction is a great Elm for smaller landscapes. This Dutch Elm Disease resistant tree exhibits upright pyramidal habit and striking, long lasting red-purple fall color. Listed as a zone 5 hardy tree, Frontier Elm has performed well here in zone 4b southern Wisconsin. 35'x25' Zones 5-8

A native birch with very attractive, exfoliating bark ranging fromcinnamon brown to parchment. Resistant to bronze birch borer. Golden-yellow fall color. Tolerates a wide range of soil moisture conditions but prefers a more acidic soil. A great candidate for up- lighting. Available in single, twin or clump form. 40'x30' Zones 4-8

Displays chalk-white bark that does not exfoliate. Tolerant of most soil conditions and considered to be resistant to bronze birch borer. Plant where soil is likely to remain cool. Available in single, twin and clump form. 30-40'x20' Zones 4-7
