A woody shrub grown as a perennial in our area. A plant that demands full sun and a well-drained site. This plant does not start to grow until the soils warm up. Cut back each spring to 8-10" and it will explode into a great perennial border filler getting 3-4' tall and sporting deep, dark purple flowers. An excellent landscape shrub with multi-season interest. The dark, glossy leaves turn purple, orange and brilliant red in fall. White flowers are borne in clusters and precede the clusters of blue-black fruit. The plant is self fruitful, and is high in vitamin C, iodine and antioxidants. It helps reduce inflammation in the body when ingested. The fruit should be harvested late August or early September and can be used as juice, dried, stewed or simply frozen to be used in smoothies. The plants get 5-7' tall and about 5' wide. Best renewal pruned by removing the oldest stems out to the ground and allowing the new shoots to grow from the base. 5-7' Zones 3-7 MAY
