Yes. Water expands as it is heated. Since virtually all plumbing systems today are closed systems, expanding water has no place to go. This can result in extremely high water pressures after each heating cycle, leading to premature tank failures. A properly charged and properly installed thermal expansion tank allows the heated water to expand naturally without increasing water pressure.

Plus it’s required by code on all closed plumbing systems.
