2019-2020 Purchasing Guide Volume 1

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS PROBLEM: Cloudy Water (Pool or Spa) SOLUTION:

MEASURES 1 gallon = 4 qts = 128 oz, 3.9 qts = 1 liter 1 quart = 2 pints = 32 oz

1 cubic foot of pool/spa volume = 7.5 gallons Pool/Spa water volume = L x W x Av. Depth x 7.5 WARNINGS 1. Heater turned off 15 minutes before turning off pump 2. Pump turned off before you backwash 3. Don’t mix chemicals; always add chemicals to some water 4. When adding acid & chlorine – add acid first and wait 4 hours 5. Don’t let stabilizer get above 100 ppm; you’ll have to drain 6. Store test reagents out of heat or sun; get new each year 7. Low pH (<7.2) eats copper heater tubes and other components 8. Troubleshoot constant air bubbles in return lines 9. Fence gates must open outward from inside pool area 10. Must shock regularly: weekly in summer, monthly in winter 11. Bather load is biggest factor eating up chlorine MAIN DAILY ROUTINE 1. Empty pump and skimmer baskets 2. Check and log filter pressure; high and low readings need to be studied 3. Backwash if filter pressure rises 10 lb above normal 4. Test water daily; record in Daily Log; see trend of data 5. After tests, adjust/add your chemicals in several small doses 6. Vacuum; and use filter protective debris canister 7. Brush walls, corners, steps very well with nylon brush 8. Check for safety equip; look for loose rails 9. Is there surface water circulation?; Adjust returns to same direction 10. Check flow out of chlorinator 11. Get rid of air in filter and pump pot lid; check suction side for leaks 12. Adjust water level halfway up skimmer hole; do you have weir doors HELPFUL HINTS 1. Change spa water every 10-14 days 2. Use non-chlorine shock in spa and pool; swim in 20 minutes 3. If you use 3" tabs – supplement with liquid chlorine 4. If you use 3" tabs, fill chlorinator tube no more than 1/2 5. Add smaller chemical amounts frequently, not large amounts at once 6. Clean/replace chlorinator parts every 2-4 months

A. Check filter for backwash need and/or degrease filter sand with cleaner. May need sand change. Filter too small for bather load. Check circulation: pump clogged, impeller too small, skimmers blocked. B. Check for early stage algae formation; if algae exists, bring chlorine level to 30 ppm with liquid applied late afternoon. C. After heavy bather load: superchlorinate: 90 oz liq/10,000 gal D. After wind/rain deposit dirt, use clarifier and shock. E. Make sure water is balanced for calcium and TA. F. Regularly replace spa water with fresh water (10 day cycles).

PROBLEM: Heater Not Igniting or Won’t Stay Lit SOLUTION: A. Clean pump and skimmer baskets B. Backwash filter C. Check for obstructions D. Look for loose or broken wires at connections E. Clean/replace pilot

PROBLEM: Spa/Pool Water has Chlorine Odor due to Dirty Chlorine SOLUTION:

A. Shock water B. Change water

PROBLEM: Oil on Water Surface from Sun Tan Lotion and Body Oil SOLUTION: A. Add enzyme oil eater B. Degrease or change sand DOSAGES 1. To kill minor algae, raise 10,000 gal to 30 ppm with 3 gal fresh liquid chlorine; to kill advanced algae, raise 10,000 to 40 ppm with 4 gal liquid. Using Cal Hypo shock (65% strength), 4 one lb bags to 10,000 gal to get 30 ppm, or 5 one lb bags to get 40 ppm 2. To Raise TA by 10 ppm, add 1.5 lbs sodium bicarb per 10,000 gal 3. To Lower TA by 10 ppm, add 21 oz liquid acid per 10,000 gal 4. One 7 oz, 90% chlorine tab provides almost 5 ppm free chlorine per 10,000 gal, One 7 oz tab equals 50 oz regular liquid chlorine BASIC ADJUSTMENTS Chlorine Raise Lower Add Chlorine Add Neutralizer or Fresh Water

For the Closest Location Visit LesliesPool.com/stores.htm HOW TO ADJUST pH AND ALKALINITY 114 7. Change sand every 1-2 years; open lid – examine sand quality 8. Degrease sand every 10 days in summer with sand cleaner 9. Use algae preventative regularly; proper level chlorine is best 10. Use Phos Free regularly, keep phosphate below 125 ppB 11. For heavy bather load, use enzyme oil eaters once a week 12. Lube all lids and backwash valve O-rings with silicone 13. Label all equipment room pipes for direction and purpose 14. Adjust TA before adjust pH; adjust pH before adjust chlorine 15. Adding acid: in one place adjusts TA; walk around adjusts pH HEALTH DEPT TARGETS Chlorine Pool 1.0 – 5.0 Chlorine Spa 3.0 – 5.0 pH 7.2 – 7.8 Total Alkalinity 60 – 180 Stabilizer (cyanuric) below 100 Calcium 200 – 400 ppm Spa Temp below 105 pH Total Alkalinity
