ASSOCIATE STARTING SALARY AND SUMMER MONTHLY PAY The median number of summer associates devoted primarily to the practice of IP law during 2016 was 2.0. Of these summer associates, 1.0 received a full-time offer and accepted. The median monthly summer pay was $7,200 lower than reported for 2014 ($8,000), but higher than reported for 2012 ($6,000). The median starting salary for first-year associates rose from $105,000 in 2012 to $110,000 in 2014, and again to $120,000 in 2016. The highest median starting salary for a first-year associate was in Boston CMSA ($180,000), and lowest in Other East ($68,500).
