Plantar Fasciitis VERY COMMON, VERY TREATABLE BY LAURA B. JAMROG, DPM Have you ever had a nagging pain in
the bottom of your foot? It plagues you in the morning and feels like a dagger stabbing you in your heel with every step you take. If this sounds familiar, you could be suf fering from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is inflamma tion of the ligament (plantar fascial band) that runs from the bottom of the heel to the forefoot and sup ports the arch. It is a very com mon foot ailment – flare-ups are commonly caused by an increase in activity or exercise involving re petitive impact. It is very prevalent amongst runners, especially during training season. The condition can also be exacerbated by walk ing barefoot, especially on hard floors. Pain associated with plantar fasciitis usually begins as a dull ache in the bot tom of the heel but can progress to a

sharp stabbing pain as the inflammation worsens. The pain is usually worse in the morning or
after long periods of rest. That’s be cause the ligament is relaxed while resting and when you take that first step, it stretches the ligament, creat ing pain at its origin in your heel.
