Pistachio trees planted in 2016
Pistachios In 2015, the company approved a plan to plant a high-value permanent crop, pistachios, on about 15 percent of its productive land. Each tree is planted by hand and spaced to thrive in the perfect conditions of California’s San Joaquin Valley, where 95 percent of the nation’s pistachios are grown. Sixty percent of Boswell’s pistachios are grown in Kern County, home to the state’s largest growing region, making it an ideal spot for Boswell’s orchards.
Why pistachios? They are drought-tolerant, thrive in the California heat, and offer better returns per unit of water compared to other crops. Pistachio trees are also long-living, producing high-quality nuts for generations.
To maintain quality, the J. G. Boswell Company has invested in its own equipment to harvest and shake the trees, ensuring that nuts are processed at peak freshness. The plan to transition 15 percent of the company’s productive land to pistachios required patience, as trees were planted in phases over ten years. It will take several more years for all trees to reach full maturity and therefore full production.
